A versatile musician, Owens is recognized for his ability to effortlessly navigate the realms of jazz, funk, R&B, and beyond. Known for his soulful tone, innovative improvisation, and commanding stage presence, he has built a reputation as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary music.
Born and raised in Virginia, Owens developed a passion for music at an early age, honing his skills at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Over the years, he has collaborated with an array of celebrated artists, including Mulgrew Miller, Charlie Haden, and Jack DeJohnette. His work as a bandleader is particularly notable, showcasing his creativity and ability to craft compelling narratives through music.
2026 will see the 5yr anniversary release of Owens’ 10 YEARS, a vibrant album that showcases the Trio’s ability to weave through an eclectic mix of genres, blending afrobeat, jazz ballads, and psychedelic rock with unrelenting energy and technical finesse. At its core, 10 Years is a jubilant commemoration of the Trio’s long-standing chemistry. Recorded in a marathon six-hour session, the album exudes spontaneity and authenticity. Saxophonist Charles Owens, bassist Andrew Randazzo, and drummer Devonne Harris crafted a tracklist that pays homage to formative influences, weaving nostalgic resonance with fresh interpretations.
The album opens with “Cameron the Wise,” an electrifying afrobeat tune that has long been a crowd-pleaser in live settings. From there, the Trio traverses a dynamic musical landscape: Owens' soulful take on John Coltrane’s “Central Park West” contrasts beautifully with the fiery intensity of Jimi Hendrix’s “If 6 Was 9.” Randazzo shines with his melodic sensibilities on Anita Baker’s “Caught Up in the Rapture” and delivers an intricate solo on Jaco Pastorius’ “Continuum.” Harris, meanwhile, demonstrates his remarkable versatility, blending swing, funk, and blistering solos on pieces like Duke Ellington’s “Angelica.”
The interplay between the musicians is nothing short of magical, reflecting their years of shared experiences on the bandstand. Owens describes the recording session as a moment of vulnerability, supported by the unshakable trust and synergy of his bandmates. The result is a cohesive yet adventurous collection of tracks that feel deeply personal and universally resonant.
10 YEARS is more than a celebration of longevity—it’s a testament to the Trio’s commitment to pushing musical boundaries while staying rooted in heartfelt expression. The album appeals to jazz enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates music brimming with soul, groove, and unbridled passion.
Downbeat - “This trio is out to have a good time and entertain, as experienced by covers like “Caught Up In The Rapture,” made famous by Anita Baker, Todd Rundgren’s “I Saw The Light,” a wicked cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “If 6 Were 9” and Led Zeppelin’s “Misty Mountain Hop.” And let’s not even go into the set’s final number, “The Rainbow Connection,” from The Muppet Movie. They actually make it kind of cool, in a tongue-in-cheek fashion.”
Style Weekly - “It’s been six months since Charles Owens‘ “Ten Years” came out, during the brief summer lull of the pandemic. That’s a long time to wait for a review, but long enough to test what seems like one of the best recordings of the year and see how it holds up across a multitude of listenings. It does.”
UK Jazz News - “love the ‘hit it and quit it’ recording approach with a touch of finesse in the mix – it sounds contemporary and it really works. This is really enjoyable music, and it grooves like crazy.”
The Times - “*****” “The first thing you notice about Charles Owens is the tone. The American tenor saxophonist is a player of irresistible warmth. Like the early John Coltrane he is firm and direct, but generous and sincere with it.”
